Amelia Powell (b. 2002) is a queer settler artist currently practicing on the unceded territories of the Lekwungen peoples. Powell studied at the University of Victoria and recieved a BSc in Psychology with a Minor in Visual Art (2026).
Her work recontextualizes elements of the human body into surreal, abstracted, and uncomfortable ways in order to explore the processes of perception and recognition. She in interested in pushing the boundaries between what is bodily and what is not.
While her practice incorporates a variety of sculptural elements, she primarily works with acrylic paint. Recently, these paintings have depicted distorted human-esque forms, mimicking processes such as healing, scarring, or decay. This collection is a part of a larger ongoing examination of the expectations of the human body; Powell is interested in exploring how our perception of the body can change when the inherent expectations of the human body are left unmet.
